The Gila Monster, besides being a fascinating and beautiful creature, gets to claim 2 major distinctions; it is not only the largest lizard which is native to the United States, it is also the only venomous one. This has given it a fearsome reputation in spite of its slow, lumbering nature. This means that it represents very little threat to humans. It has been said that the only way to get bitten by one would be if you were to actually help it to do so! Even so, its venom is only a fairly mild neurotoxin. However, a synthetic version of a protein found in its saliva is used as a treatment for Type 2 Diabetes in humans. Named for the Gila River Basin in Arizona where they were first discovered, they are now a threatened species. IMPORTANT PHOTO NOTE: Yeah, you caught me...I cheated.
